Mercedes opened a studio in Yorkville with no cars to sell

Mercedes-Benz Studio Toronto was a summer residency inside Holt Renfrew Yorkville built around tennis culture rather than vehicles: a Reigning Champ collaboration, Canada’s first installation of Pro Shop (the New York retail-gallery concept by Vicente Muñoz), and a Grand Slam-inspired menu at Holt’s Café. It’s a case study in cultural residency: a luxury brand buying belonging in a scene instead of showroom traffic.

In brief.

The most interesting car-brand space in Toronto this summer contained, functionally, no car pitch. Mercedes-Benz Studio Toronto set up inside Holt Renfrew Yorkville as a residency themed around tennis: apparel with Vancouver’s Reigning Champ, special programming timed to the Grand Slam calendar (activated weekends July 10 to 12 and July 31 to August 2), and the anchor piece, Canada’s first installation of Pro Shop, the cult New York concept founded by Vicente Muñoz that operates as part retail space, part gallery, part cultural hub for tennis nostalgia and craft.

Even the food participated: Holt’s Café ran a Grand Slam-inspired menu, extending the theme past the studio’s walls so the visit lingered. That detail is small and telling. Someone designed the experience as a full loop through the store, not a corner of it.

Call the model what it is: cultural residency. Instead of renting attention (a pop-up shouting its own name), the brand embedded inside an existing scene with real credibility, brought genuinely respected collaborators, and let adjacency do the persuading. Tennis is a shrewd scene choice for Mercedes: affluent, style-literate, seasonal, and currently fashionable. Pro Shop is the credibility engine; Reigning Champ is the Canadian handshake; the café menu is the wink.

The design standard this model demands is unforgiving. A residency inside Holt Renfrew is judged against luxury retail fit-and-finish, not against event-industry tolerances. Millwork, lighting, material honesty, the way a display edge meets the floor: the surrounding store sets the bar, and anything that reads as temporary reads as cheap. This is the craft difference between pop-up construction and residency construction, and it’s mostly invisible until it’s wrong.

The pattern is transferable well beyond automotive. Any brand with a luxury or lifestyle position can ask: which scene do we deserve to sit inside, who are the collaborators that scene already trusts, and what’s the built environment that earns the address? The answers produce something quieter and stickier than a takeover: repeat visits, editorial coverage, and the compounding effect of being found somewhere credible.

For GTA retail and brand teams, the local proof now exists at the corner of Bloor and Yonge. If a residency is in your 2026-27 plan, the make-or-break line item is the build quality that lets a temporary space live inside a permanent luxury environment. Brience is a Toronto-based custom fabrication and experiential design studio; that finish level is the standard we build to, and it’s a conversation worth having before a landlord ever sees your deck.
